Bordering Nyamilu is Kipingi, an area that needs clean water just as badly as Nyamilu. During the dry season most of the water sources cease to provide any water. The one remaining source in Kipingi equipped with a manual water pump then has to provide for the entire area. This requires women and children walk up to 2.5km away, wait in line for sometimes up to 2 hours, and return 2.5km with the water on their heads. HELP will size a powered pump for the current water source and connect it to a large holding tank so the people of Kipingi won’t have to wait while someone uses a manual pump to extract the water from the well. Phase II, possibly in 2008, would involve a gravity fed distribution system.
